Berlin Sinfonietta

Sinfonietta Phil

The Berlin Sinfonietta is one of the most prominent in the landscape of Berlin’s professional orchestras. Founded in 1974, as the chamber orchestra of the “Berlin Symphony Orchestra” today the “Konzerhausorchester Berlin” it follows its tradition ever since.

As the exclusive partner with IMB in more than 35 masterclasses, the Berlin Sinfonietta established itself as an orchestra with special expertise in such events like masterclasses, with participating conductors in all levels. This expertise is demonstrated in rehearsals and concerts by the very experienced players, warmhearted musicians, amazingly patient and extremely devoted to the learning process and very helpful and supportive for the conductor who stands on the podium, regardless of his/her level. To conclude It is a very special orchestra, with very special and communicative musicians, that will always be there for the conductor. (For videos scroll to the bottom of the page)

The founder of the orchestra, Hans Peter Franck, who was for many years the second conductor of the BSO, shaped the orchestras sound and image throughout the years.

Parallel to renaming the chamber orchestra orchertra smilingin 1987 to “Berlin Sinfonietta”, a new chapter in the development of the orchestra’s sound had begun. The orchestra expanded its repertoire and its capacity to a symphony orchestra and started to cooperate with big choir and other musical institutes. Then followed numerous concerts and recordings of works by Mozart (Requiem), Brahms (Requiem), Haydn (The Creation, seasons), Handel (Messiah), Bach (B Minor Mass), Dvorak and Rossini (Stabat Mater), Mendelssohn (Elias, Paul), Schubert (Masses). A special highlight was the performance of Berlioz – Requiem in 1999 in the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. Performance with 130 musicians and 160 singers showed the versatility of the orchestra.

The Berlin Sinfonietta is obliged to contemporary music and 20th Century music, and makes an important ingredient in Berlin’s musical scene.

The orchestra plays regularly in the most important concert halls in Berlin and its surroundings, such as the Philharmonie and the Konzerthaus Berlin.

The Berlin Sinfonietta took part in many masterclasses for conductors in Berlin led by the most important conducting mentors of our time like Jorma Panula, Colin Metters, Lior Shambadal, Roberto Paternostro and  Kenneth Kiesler to name a few. The Orchestra captures its important role in the developing of a new generation of professional conductors. The working atmosphere with the orchestra is extremely friendly, and  was always very rewarding to the participants in these courses.
