After our many successful masterclasses, we are proud to welcome again one of the leading and most distinguished conducting pedagogues of our time, Prof. Colin Metters. He is the Professor emeritus of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he founded the Conductors’ Course in 1983. Colin has an international reputation as a leading pedagogue, and has given masterclasses in Germany, Poland, Finland, Australia, Venezuela, Vietnam, China and the USA. His wide experience affords him an enviable reputation as professional conductor, orchestral trainer and conducting instructor. He has worked with leading symphony orchestras in the UK, and guest-conducted extensively abroad. In 1997 he was appointed Music Adviser and Principal Guest Conductor to the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, directing a five-year program of development. In 1999, in recognition of his work, he was awarded the Vietnamese equivalent of the Order of Merit, the first to be made to a British citizen.
This masterclass is the second in our Beethoven Symphonies Cycle, which started with a masterclass with Prof. Johannes Wildner in 2018 with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd symphonies. With Prof. Metters we will continue our journey and study, together with the experienced Berlin Sinfonietta the next three symphonies, the 4th, 5th and 7th. Nothing needs to be said or added regarding this program. It is a collection of very challenging masterpieces, a core and must repertoire that every conductor should be familiar with. We encourage conductors to join for this intensiv week with Prof. Metters, the Berlin Sinfonietta and Beethoven’s symphonic work.
About the masterclass
Here is all you need to know about the masterclass’s objectives, its content, logistics and the general schedule. Besides intensive active conducting sessions with our professional orchestra, The Berlin Sinfonietta, and the piano sessions with two pianists, each one of the participants will have the chance to work with Prof. Metters on all the critical aspects of orchestra conducting. Be prepared for an intense week of deep score studying, musical analysis, conducting technique and more. As always we will hold four orchestra rehearsals (4 hours long each) with the dedicated and patient musicians of the Berlin Sinfonietta, where you will be able to try and learn in a superb, non competitive and very friendly atmosphere. Location
The masterclass will take place in Oranienburgerstr. 28, 10117 Berlin. The main hall of the Jewish Community Building in Berlin is located on the third floor. The Building is in Berlin’s Miete district, which considered to be “the heart” of the city, and close to all the attractions that the city has to offer. The modern and intimate hall is located next to the big and famous Synagogue.

Final Concert
The Final Concert takes place in the very intimate and welcoming St. Lukas Church, Bernburger Str. 3-5, 10963 Berlin. Unlike others, we insist that ALL of the participants will take part and experience the live performance in the public Final Concert of the masterclass. For us it is the culmination and an integral part of the intensiv week of tutoring and learning. These concerts are advertised and always attract music lovers, and already became a tradition in the city musical landscape.
Video Recordings
All of the conductors will receive a HD video recording of all rehearsals and of the final concert.
NEW! We also happy to offer the possibility for the conductors to watch their video on the same day of the rehearsal, in order to prepare for the next day’s session*. The recorded sessions (including the final concert) will be given to each participant right after the final concert on an 8 GB USB stick, which they may keep as a souvenir from the week.
Together with the USB stick with all video recordings, each participant, active and passive, will receive an official Certificate of Participation signed by Prof. Metters.
Participants are welcome to bring their own recording/filming devices.
The course is taught primarily in English and secondarily in German, though speakers of all languages are encouraged to join as well. The orchestra’s musicians, Prof. Wildner and the other conducting colleagues will be able and happy to assist.

Participants are expected to prepare all the pieces in order to gain the maximum from the masterclass’ week.
*Conductors who wish to review their video on the same day, should bring a device that can play videos (a laptop or a tablet) that have the option to read files from a USB sticks.
